The much-anticipated remake for 1994’s System Shock has been put on indefinite hiatus.
Announced via an update letter on the game’s Kickstarter page, developer Nightdive Studios has revealed that it will need time to “reassess,” citing behind-the-scenes changes and an underestimated scope.
“Maybe we were too successful. Maybe we lost our focus. The vision began to change,” the post from Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick says. “We moved from a Remaster [sic] to a completely new game. We shifted engines from Unity to Unreal, a choice that we do not regret and one that has worked out for us. With the switch we began envisioning doing more, but straying from the core concepts of the original title.”
The original 2016 Kickstarter project managed to garner 21,000 backers and a little more than USD$1.3 million on little more than a trailer and a promise. With such an initially successful beginning, Kick claims the team felt like it needed to reach out to other publishing partners for further resources. Unfortunately, Kick also states that he let the project get out of control.
Kick wants fans to know that a hiatus does not mean the end for the project: “We are taking a break, but NOT ending the project. Please accept my personal assurance that we will be back and stronger than ever. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled.”
Promises and reassurance from Kick have not been enough for many backers though, with a number taking to the page’s comments to express their concerns and displeasure.
Those who are fans of the series, backer or not, should be reminded that a third installment in the franchise is still in development over at OtherSide Entertainment.
