Spyro The Dragon Trilogy remaster due out this year claim rumours

It looks like the success of Crash Bandicoot’s comeback is going to help bring back his stablemate, as rumours suggest another 90s revival.

With Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy becoming the best-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive of last year, you really didn’t need any rumours to imagine that Spyro The Dragon would be next. Especially as Activision owns the rights to both characters.

But according to website Kotaku it is definitely happening, and it’ll be announced in March and released this autumn.

So that would be one single release that includes remasters of PlayStation 1 games Spyro The Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year Of The Dragon.

The remaster will allegedly work just like the Crash one, with significantly updated graphics, animation, and cut scenes. As well as a remastered soundtrack, modern save system, and potentially also unseen content that was cut from the original versions.

What’ll also be the same is that the game will have a one-year exclusivity deal on the PlayStation 4, with one source apparently suggesting a September release date – which is when the series will be celebrating its 20th anniversary.

All of this is just rumours, but if it’s not what Activision was planning all along we’d be shocked. One interesting detail though is that apparently N. Sane Trilogy developer Vicarious Visions is making the remaster. Which in itself is not surprising, but may mean they’re not the one’s doing the rumoured new Crash Bandicoot game.

Even more so than Crash Bandicoot, there is the question of whether the Spyro games were actually ever that good. But whatever you think of them, the N. Sane Trilogy did have some of the best remasters around – in terms of the amount of effort that went into modernising the graphics and controls.

Rumours suggest that Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy will be coming to at least Switch and PC this year, and we’d assume Xbox One as soon as Activision are legally able.
