The company said, “There are more than 25 million fans who engage with Playboy via our various Facebook pages, and we do not want to be complicit in exposing them to the reported practices. That is why we have announced that we will be leaving Facebook's platform, deactivating the Playboy accounts that Playboy Enterprises manages directly.”
The #deletefacebook campaign started when the data scandal related to Facebook and Cambridge Analytica came to light. This began in 2014, when an academic of Russian origin at Cambridge University in the U.K created a Facebook app which asked the users to take psychological test. While taking the test, the users were asked to key in the data of their Facebook Friends. Later, Kogan sold the data to a voter profiling company in the UK in the name of Cambridge Analytica.
Talking about the same issue, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton has asked his Twitter followers to delete Facebook. He tweeted, “It is time. #deletefacebook.” Acton has about 21,000 followers on Twitter.
Last week, Elon Musk also deleted the Facebook pages for Tesla and SpaceX. Facebook pages of SpaceX and Tesla, which had millions of followers, are no longer accessible.
In a statement Musk said, "I don't use FB & never have, so don't think I'm some kind of martyr or my companies are taking a huge blow. Also, we don't advertise or pay for endorsements, so ... don't care."
