Qualcomm is in talks to settle a dispute with Huawei Technologies, which has been withholding royalty payments from the chipmaker, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. The negotiations are well along and could result in a settlement in the coming weeks, the report said.
Huawei is thought to be the licensee unnamed by Qualcomm that is withholding significant royalties. This is the second customer to stop payments, after Apple ordered its contract manufacturers to stop paying the chipmaker last year. The loss of royalties from two of the world's biggest smartphone makers has made a serious dent in Qualcomm's earnings. Its growth plan designed to fend off Broadcom's hostile takeover bid is based on restoring that revenue.
