Blitz v2 And Teams Of 20 v2: What's Different In Fortnite: Battle Royale's New Modes

Fortnite: Battle Royale

Fortnite: Battle Royale's big v4.3 patch went live today, and there are a ton of additions big and small. But for anyone that was getting a little tired of Solid Gold, there are also some new limited time modes in the mix, bringing some new ways to play aside from the usual solo, duo and squads gameplay. It's now become standard for Epic to run two limited time modes at one time, and this week we've got two old favorites retooled with some slight updates since they last showed up: Blitz v2 and Teams of 20 v2. Here's what we're working with:

Blitz v2: Blitz is a vastly accelerated version of the standard game. It starts with the storm circle already forming and then moves much more quickly from storm to storm from there: the maximum match length is just 15 minutes, which is perfect for mobile. There's also way more loot to facilitate chaos during those 15 minutes, with spawn increases for treasure chests, ammo boxes and supply drops, as well as increased resource harvesting rates to ensure that you can still get enough materials to build with in the endgame.

V2 brings a few changes, but mostly it just rolls in all of the new items that Epic has added to the game since this mode first rolled around. The bus also now flies lower, reducing the amount of time spent skydiving in the relatively quick mode. When it first showed up, Blitz was a great break from the relative slowness of the usual game, and I'm excited to get back to it. It's available as a solo or squad mode.

Teams of 20 v2: Teams of 20 is a slight adaptation of the basic idea behind 50 vs. 50, which has long been one of Fortnite's most popular modes. It's what it sounds like: instead of two teams of 50 there are 5 teams of 20, and you fight to the death all the same. There's some really interesting action that happens here, mostly winding up in a shifting conflict between three or four teams at any moment, with one team trying to take advantage of two other teams fighting until that becomes the main fight, and so on. There are more tactical options available than in 50 vs. 50, and I'm glad to see this one return.

V2 brings one important change: each team now has their own bus, just like in 50 vs. 50, making it easier to stay squadded throughout the entire match. We're also getting increased ammo and consumables from treasure chests to go along with increased loot spawns overall. The ammo is particularly useful because you wind up spending a lot of time firing from a distance with rifles.

Nothing huge this week when it comes to modes, but two reliable game types round out the usual experience. Check back next week for what will likely be the first free build/practice mode in the form of "Playroom."
