OnePlus 6 Kernel Sources Published In Time For Its Release

OnePlus published the kernel source code of its latest Android flagship — the OnePlus 6 — some 24 hours prior to the smartphone’s global release, having uploaded them to GitHub yesterday. With the new high-end phablet now being available for purchase on a worldwide level, third-party developers have everything they need to start working on custom ROMs and software tweaks for the OnePlus 6. The Shenzhen, Guangdong-based original equipment manufacturer said the kernel sources for the device were already available simultaneously with its Android P beta earlier this month but hasn’t actually uploaded them to GitHub until this Monday.

The development marks a continuation of OnePlus’s kernel source release practices established with the OnePlus 5 and 5T which saw the company publish its software code simultaneously with the commercialization of its products. The firm’s kernel sources weren’t being released in such a regular manner in 2016, prompting criticism that presumably pushed it to change its ways. Outside of that episode, OnePlus is generally considered as one of the most developer-friendly OEMs on the market, with its products being held in high regard by many smartphone enthusiasts, particularly the demographic that prefers rooting their handsets and installing custom ROMs on them.

Following its official announcement last Wednesday, the OnePlus 6 is being offered for purchase globally and is expected to become the company’s fastest-selling device to date, much like all of its previous products outperformed their direct predecessors. The smartphone is being offered in three variants, starting at 6GB of RAM and 64GB of flash memory and going up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space. A 6.28-inch FHD+ display is also part of the package, featuring an elongated 19:9 aspect ratio due to the inclusion of a notch. The OnePlus 6 starts at $529, with its most premium model being priced at $629. Consumers in certain markets like India are also eligible for a number of early adopter discounts like cashbacks.
