Samsung's First Foldable Phone Won't Be Called Galaxy X: Rumor

Samsung’s first foldable Android smartphone won’t use the “Galaxy X” moniker that’s been circulating the industry for several years now, established mobile industry insider from China known only by their Twitter handle “MMDDJ_” said earlier today. While the source didn’t elaborate on the matter, the allegation that Samsung ultimately opted to avoid using the Galaxy X moniker is far from new, having already been raised on several occasions over the last twelve months. Regardless of the name that Samsung ends up attaching to its unconventional mobile device, the gadget is still likely to be part of the Galaxy family, one of the most valuable product brands on the planet.

An in-depth report published by Bloomberg last week suggested the upcoming device won’t be fully bendable and will have a display strip sticking out once its closed. The bar in question won’t be visible in its folded-out state and will primarily be used for delivering at-glance notifications and offering shortcuts. The handset is expected to be produced in limited quantities and will target several niche categories of consumers, including gamers, as per the same report. Samsung is understood to have picked a design that uses a single OLED panel that can be bent inwards and features a mechanical hinge on its back. The joint in question is likely to be masked to a degree, with the overall aesthetic of the handset hence resembling the flip phone form factor, as per the same report, as well as dozens of previous rumors about Samsung’s new product.

The foldable Android phone is expected to be announced in early 2019, most likely at the next edition of the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Samsung is primarily looking to test the market response with the upcoming device and hasn’t attached any major commercial expectations to the project, promising sales may see it follow up on the bendable phone concept as early as the second half of 2019, industry sources said earlier this month.
