Galaxy Note 9 Owners Offered Free Gear VR Adapter

If you already own a Gear VR virtual reality headset and recently upgraded to the Galaxy Note 9, you have a problem. The Gear VR is listed as compatible with a number of Galaxy phones including the S9, S9+, Note 8, S8, S8+, S7, S7 edge, Note 5, S6 edge+, S6, S6 edge, A8 Star, A8, A8+. The Note 9 doesn't fit, though, but Samsung still lists it as a compatible model.

Before you start trying to modify the Gear VR, know that Samsung realizes it won't fit. The solution to this problem comes in the form of an adapter. The good news is, Note 9 owners can get the adapter for free, they just need to phone Samsung or have a live chat.

As SamMobile reports, some Note 9 owners had turned to using a Dremel in order to get their handsets to fit inside the Gear VR. Don't do this!

Samsung made the SM-R325N model of the headset compatible via an adapter, but didn't ship it with the phone for obvious reasons. To get one, simply phone Samsung in the US on 1-800-Samsung and ask for one. Alternatively, you can load up the Samsung+ app and request one using the live chat feature.

The one piece of bad news is the wait time. Samsung states it takes two weeks for the adapter to reach you once requested. So while it's free, it's not an instant fix (no, don't reach for the Dremel). We also aren't getting a new Gear VR model that will be compatible out of the box. The next update isn't expected until 2019 alongside the Galaxy S10, so this adapter is essential.
