Hackers have found evidence that the PC version of Red Dead Redemption II could have a VR mode, as HTC also hint at more Rockstar VR.
Officially there is no PC version of Red Dead Redemption II, which is unusual nowadays but Rockstar didn’t initially announce one for Grand Theft Auto VI either – even though it came out eventually.
No one doubts there will be a PC version eventually but there could be an unexpected reason for its delay: a VR option.
A companion app for the console versions of the game was released on Friday and fansite RockstarINTEL discovered multiple lines of code that not only refer to a PC version but also the Oculus Rift VR headset.

It’s possible the code could be there by accident – possibly cut and pasted from somewhere else or part of a template. But Rockstar’s only VR game so far is L.A. Noire and that didn’t have a companion app.
The circumstantial evidence begins to pile up when you recall that HTC, who make the Vive headset with Valve, have already stated in an interview with UploadVR that Rockstar are ‘not done’ with VR.
The HTC Vive isn’t mentioned in the code, but it’s almost certain it would be compatible if Rockstar does embrace VR for Red Dead Redemption II. It’s harder to say about PlayStation VR though, as that wasn’t supported for L.A. Noire.
Plans change and what HTC was hinting at didn’t necessarily have anything to do with Red Dead Redemption II, but Rockstar has made a big fuss about Red Dead Redemption II having a first person view for the entire game.
Or alternatively L.A. Noire shows that Rockstar are happy to chop out only the bits that work well with VR to make a separate game.
Either way, there’s a good chance that when Red Dead Redemption II is announced for PC it’ll come with a very welcome bonus…
