Last week, Samsung finally showed off its long-rumored foldable smartphone complete with a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display. The phone can quickly switch to become a mini tablet, offering more screen space while still capable of fitting in a pocket. There was no news of a price or release date, but now we're hearing suggestions of a name, price, and release window.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, Samsung has decided to call its folding phone the Galaxy F, which is the obvious choice when you think about it. The agency also reports that the Galaxy S10 is set to launch in February and will come with 5G support. However, a month later in March, the Galaxy F will apparently be released. Last week Samsung simply stated it would appear in the first half of 2019.
If you want a Galaxy F, then I suggest you start saving now and limit your Christmas expenditure. This novel new phone is not going to be cheap!
Right now, the iPhone XS Max is the most expensive premium smartphone, which you can pick up for around $1,100. The Galaxy F does not have a final price yet, but it is expected to cost around 2 million won, which converts to roughly $1,770. For most consumers, that's surely too much for a phone, but I would have said the same about the pricing of the latest iPhones.
Samsung is going to ship at least a million of the Galaxy F next year, which even at that high price point should sell because of the novelty this phone offers. However, a lot will come down to the experience of using one day-to-day. Having the ability to expand your display on demand certainly sounds like a killer feature, but does it work in practice? And how well will that Infinity Flex Display hold up from repeated folding and unfolding over a couple of years on contract?
