Target's Black Friday 2018 Ad Has Nasty Surprises

This post was created by the Contributor in partnership with BestBlackFriday.com, which specializes in holiday season sales. The deals highlighted within this post were independently selected and do not contain affiliate links.

There is now less than one week until Black Friday 2018. Moreover, since we have ad scans from Best Buy (52-pages), Kohl’s (64-pages), Walmart (32-pages) and Target (47-pages) we’re in a great position to see not only which deals stand out, but which retailers fall short. And Target’s Black Friday sales, in particular, have some nasty surprises.

This is the fifth article in my Black Friday ‘Nasty Surprises’ series. Working alongside BestBlackFriday.com, I’m analysing the biggest Black Friday 2018 sales to help you understand where the big deals fall short. No store is perfect and you can also read about deals you should avoid: at Best Buy, at Costco, at Kohl’s and at Walmart.

But this is where Target falls short of the competition in some pretty major ways…

Apple's iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XRApple

Premium Smartphones

Samsung Galaxy - On the surface Target’s offer of a $300 Gift Card with qualified activation of a Galaxy Note 9 (See Ad Scan Deal), Samsung Galaxy S9 (See Ad Scan Deal) or Galaxy S9+ (See Ad Scan Deal) looks good. But you can get better. Best Buy has $300 of direct savings (See Better Deal) and Samsung.com is offering $400 discounts on the Note 9 (See Better Deal), S9 (See Better Deal) and Galaxy S9+ (See Better Deal).

Apple iPhones - It’s a similar story here: Target is giving $250 Gift Cards with qualified activation on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max (See Ad Scan Deal) or a $150 Gift Card on the iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8 and iPhone X (See Ad Scan Deal). But Walmart is giving $300 gift cards on the iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone XR (See Better Deal) and massive $400 gift card son iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X (See Better Ad Deal). Walmart activations begin at 8pm on Thanksgiving.

Games Consoles

Sony PS4  - Target will sell the PlayStation 4 1TB Spider-Man Bundle for $199.99 (save $100) (See Ad Scan Deal), but Kohl’s will match this and include $60 Kohl's Cash (See Better Deal). There’s no point in losing out on $60 by shopping for this deal at Target.

Xbox One Bundles - More console woes. Target is selling the popular Xbox One S 1TB Minecraft Bundle for $199.99 (saving $100) with a $20 Target gift card (See Ad Scan Deal). As above, Kohl’s matches this and bundles a $60 gift card (See Better Deal). Additionally, Target is not offering any Xbox One X bundles this year. The best Xbox One X deal is also at Kohl’s where it will sell the Microsoft Xbox One X 1TB PlayersUnknown's Battlegrounds Console Bundle for $399.99 (save $130) + $120 Kohl's Cash (See Deal). Amazon also has the Xbox One X 1TB Fallout 76 Bundle for $429 (See Deal) or $100 straight off the Xbox One X itself (See Deal).

Xbox One X (left) and Xbox One S (right)Microsoft

Google Home Hub - Another high profile loss. Target is offering the Google Home Hub for $99 saying $50 (See Ad Scan Deal), but Best Buy matches this and includes $10 in My Best Buy Rewards (See Better Deal) while Walmart also sells for $99 and bundles $10 VUDU Credit (See Better Deal). But Kohl’s again has the best deal. It will sell the Google Home Hub Smart Screen + $15 Kohl's Cash for the same $99 asking price (See Best Deal).

So what does Target get right? It has some strong TV deals and several wins against Walmart. That said, Best Buy has a wider TV selection and Kohl’s has arguably the best premium model discounts. As noted above, every store has its weaknesses but Target more than most this year.

Remember my motto: Be deal-smart, not store-loyal.
