The 'Fortnite' Cube Just Exploded And Transported All Players To Another Dimension

Fortnite just had its second ever can’t-miss live, one time-only event on the map, a sequel to the season 4 rocket launch that tore open a bunch of rifts in the sky.

This time around, all eyes were on the mysterious purple Cube that has been rolling and floating around the map for about a full season now, annnnnd now, the Cube is no more.

The sequence of events that I watched from the floor of Loot (Leaky) Lake was as follows:

First, the Cube started to pulse and glow, something dropped out of the bottom of it into the hole in the lake.

Then it started to spin, getting really, really bright and fast.

Then it blew up, turning the entire screen white.

Then things got really crazy.

After that, the screen came back and every player on the map was floating in some sort of…interdimensional vortex? It’s hard to describe, it’s like The Matrix meets heaven, and you could sort of float around, but not for long.

Soon enough, what appeared to be a butterfly with wings made of rifts floated around you. “You” as in, every player saw this thing floating around them in particular, and the game actually transitioned into a full on cutscene for every single player where the rift butterfly landed on your hand and transported you back onto the map.

The map has been…cleansed, I guess you would say? Leaky Lake has been modified with a series of small islands/craters, the middle of which has something I would call I guess, Cube Stonehenge, which is a series of Cube fragments that may not exist as a memorial to the Cube that’s been with us for a season now, but may now never be seen again.

The rest of the map seems, brighter somehow. There’s a rainbow in the sky and I believe the zombies are gone, though I have to check on that. Also in the game, we now have a series of “Lil Kevin” challenges that can unlock new googly-eyed Cube back bling as another memorial to the big Cube. They’re pretty easy, just playing games and getting XP and the like.

I am currently trying to figure out what else may have changed about the map, and where on earth things go from here. Are we actually done with the entire Cube corruption plotline now? This is something that has been building since season 3 with the comet, so I am curious as to what happens next as there are no obvious clues about what that may be. We are only in week 6 of season 6 here, so it stands to reason more stuff should happen in the run-up to the final weeks and the new season transition, but perhaps the Cube is permanently behind us. Winter is coming, and I very much bet that we’re going to see a snowy version of the map for season 7, at the very least.

This was a cool, confusing event that was admittedly impressive with the individualized cutscene for every player, which I am not sure how they pulled off on a live server like that. I am off to hunt for more clues about what has changed and what’s happening next, but right now the servers are nuked. If you missed the event for yourself, watch it here:
