Totally Real Reasons Why Sony PlayStation Is Skipping E3 2019

For the 24 years there has been an E3, there’s been a PlayStation presence at E3. Ever since Sony first entered the video game console market with PS1 in 1994, it showed off its games and hardware at the world’s biggest video game industry event. Whether it was riding high with the PS2, failing to make the $600 pitch with PS3, or clowning on the Xbox One’s former used games policy with PS4, PlayStation and E3 have been joined at the hip.

Until now.

Sony shocked us by casually revealing that the company plans on skipping E3 2019. You’ll still see games that run on PlayStation 4, if only because of third-parties, but don’t expect new first-party Sony exclusives or kind of new hardware announcements. We’re still processing it really. The PlayStation 4 is the dominant video game machine of this generation. So why skip the time of year to really flex? Especially when competitors Nintendo and Microsoft were quick to announce their E3 plans haven’t changed. Here are just some of our guesses as to why PlayStation is skipping E3 2019.

They’re Waiting Until PlayStation 5

This Sony news came right around the fifth anniversary of the PS4. It reminded us this generation is nearly over. We can all feel it. All the half-step upgrades in the world like PS4 Pro can’t stave off the next inevitable great leap in technology. PlayStation 5 probably won’t be ready for two more years. But by taking a break in 2019, Sony can make PS5’s coming out party at E3 2020 even more spectacular.

They’re Planning A New PSX

E3 wasn’t the only event Sony bailed on recently. After years of successful PlayStation Experience fan events, Sony announced the show won’t happened this December like it has in the past. PSX shows, like Nintendo Directs, were proof that Sony could create its own hype and news cycle completely independent from E3. So again, maybe they’re just taking a break from E3 and this PSX to plan an even bigger PS5-centric PSX next year.

E3 Sucks Now

E3 sucks now! It’s way more depressing. They still haven’t managed to figure out how to integrate the general public with the journalists there to do their jobs. Other publishers like EA keep holding their own LA events just far enough away to be annoying. If it made good business sense to skip E3 I might do it too!

It Was Death Stranding The Whole Time

There’s the chance this is all just a huge misinformation campaign for Death Stranding, the absolutely inscrutable upcoming PS4-exclusive from Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima. Yeah Sony might skip E3, but if we go to their usual press conference stage at their usual time slot we’ll just see Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen covered in oil. That honestly sounds way better.

They Have Nothing New To Show

The whole point of E3 is to show off your games. In the past, Sony had great new games to show off like Horizon, God of War, Uncharted 4, and Spider-Man. There are still promising PlayStation games yet to come like Death Stranding, Ghosts of Tsushima, Dreams, and The Last of Us Part 2. But Sony has already said so much about them, in a weird barn no less, that the next step is to just release them. And if Sony doesn’t have anything new to announce, then yeah there’s no point in PlayStation going to E3 2019.
