Can dogs eat corn? You may be asking this if you want to share a nice corn on the cob with your pooch or if your dog snagged a few pieces of corn that fell off your plate. Humans can eat corn, so is corn also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is yes, dogs can safely eat corn. But there are some exceptions and things to consider, like what form of corn you give them and how much you give them. As always, you must ask your veterinarian before sharing human foods with your dog, including corn.

Here’s what you should know about feeding corn to dogs.

It’s usually safe for your dog to eat corn, especially if given in moderation. Corn is a popular grain that can provide good carbohydrates, not just for humans, but for your pooches as well. It’s also a good form of protein, vitamins, linoleic acids, potassium, and even fiber.

Corn has phytochemicals like carotenoids, which help boost the immune system and lower the risk of chronic infection or illness.

Corn is also inexpensive, which means you can buy this in large quantities, not just for you but for your pup as well to enjoy at home.

There are a few things to consider before feeding your dog corn. One of those considerations is making sure you dog doesn’t have any food allergies to corn.

Cailin R Heinze, VMD, DACVN, is an assistant professor of nutrition at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. Heinze says, “In truth, true food allergies are relatively uncommon in dogs and cats. Corn in and of itself is not a problem and can be part of a well-balanced and nutritious diet.”

Still, some dogs can be allergic and even develop allergies later in life, so always take caution with new food. If you notice diarrhea or skin problems after your dog eats a certain food, make sure to consult with their vet.

Another thing to consider is what form of corn you feed your dog. If you are feeding them popcorn, for example, make sure it is unsalted and unbuttered. Popcorn can contain high amounts of fat and sodium. Too much can be bad for your dog and can lead to obesity and more serious issues like kidney disease.

Also watch out when it comes to giving them a corn cob. While it might be a nice treat for them to chew on, a piece can become a choking hazard or even cause intestinal blockage. If you notice any whimpering, restlessness, vomiting, or any other type of stomach issues after they consume a corn cob, take them to your nearest vet clinic.

As with anything new you introduce to your pup, make sure you consult with your veterinarian to make sure it’s okay for them to consume.
