2019 Land Rover Range Rover SV Coupe First Look

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are fond of calling special versions of their sedans and SUVs "coupes," even though these vehicles still have four doors. Well, the 2019 Range Rover SV Coupe, which debuts at the 2018 Geneva Auto Show, is the real deal — it's a genuine two-door, four-seat version of the regular Range Rover.

Land Rover says it will limit production of the Range Rover SV Coupe to 999 units globally, with the starting price an eye-watering $295,000. That's nearly double the cost of the most expensive four-door Range Rover, the SV Autobiography. But perhaps softening the hit is the the Coupe's prolific standard equipment and exclusive options.

Standard features for the SV Coupe include a 23-speaker Meridian sound system, 20-way-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation, 10-way-adjustable rear seats (also with heating and ventilation), a panoramic sunroof, dual center-console displays featuring two 10-inch screens, and a 10-inch head-up driver display. Also available are 23-inch wheels, larger than any wheel offered on a Range Rover before.

Interior appointments are a large part of what sets the SV Coupe apart from its four-door sibling. Upholstery is available in one of four two-tone color schemes with the front and rear seats coming in different colors (or one of four single-color schemes) and an abundance of eye-catching materials throughout the cabin. A diamond-shape quilted-leather design is used on all four seating positions while three special wood choices are available for the dashboard and door panels.

On the outside — aside from the two missing doors — there's not much in the way of unique aesthetics that set apart the SV Coupe. Sure, there are some unique grilles, but that's about it. Most of the Range Rover's capability remains intact. Under the hood is the Range Rover's top-spec supercharged 5.0-liter V8. It generates 557 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque (up 10 lb-ft from the standard Range Rover SV Autobiography) and is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. The SV Coupe retains the standard Rover's maximum tow rating of 7,716 pounds. Also standard is most of the Range Rover's off-roading equipment, including a two-speed transfer case and Range Rover's Terrain Response 2 system that provides multiple settings to adjust ride comfort and off-road responsiveness over varying road surfaces.

We have to give credit to Land Rover here. The two-door design harkens back to the days of the original Range Rovers, while the plush luxury trimmings make it effortlessly modern and chic. Considering the Coupe's increased price and the limited-production numbers, the 2019 Land Rover Range Rover SV Coupe will no doubt be a rare sight on the road.
