So: something's up in Fortnite Battle Royale. There's a comet in the sky, and it seems to be getting bigger. As happens in video games, speculation is running rampant. And as Paul Tassi recently wrote, there's one fan theory about why this is happening that's currently beating all the others -- that this comet is pointed right at Tilted Towers, currently the most loot and combat-dense location in the game. People think that Epic is going to bomb the game's only city and turn it into a crater, maintaining the vertical construction but going down, instead of up. For most games, I'd say this sort of thing is wishful thinking. But with this one, I actually think it's going to happen. Here's why:
It would be nuts: This is, to be perfectly honest, the biggest reason why I could imagine this happening. Everything that's happened with Fortnite so far has been of the massive, unexpected variety: completely retooling a zombie survival game into large-scale PvP; redesigning the map with new locations just a few months after releasing a new version; launching a mobile version with a week's warning; attracting Drake's attention, etc. That's how Epic is playing this: by doing surprising things, and doing them quickly. Turning Titled Towers upside down into a crater would fit right into that mold. On top of that, this is a good time for it: Fortnite has a ton of new players that are maybe getting comfortable with the map in its current state. Comfort can be boring: it might be worth shaking things up a bit.
This is just the sort of thing Epic has talked about doing: While PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has focused on building out a larger selection of maps, Epic has indicated that it's much more interested in growing and evolving this map than it is in building a second one. Here's a Rolling Stone interview with Fortnite Lead Level Designer David Spalinski:
“We’re still open to the idea of making a new map, but there is a value in understanding the best version of this map. This next update is going to significantly update the map, but then we’re going to look at it and see where it goes. We want to maximize expression.”
There's that line: "look at it and see where it goes." That sounds like a development team totally open to this sort of thing.
We're all talking about it: Who knows why that comet made its way into the sky? Maybe it was just on a whim, maybe the developers figured they'd work out what it did later. Even if that wasn't always the plan, you can't deny that it's a hilarious idea. Epic is clearly nimble enough to build something like this on a month's notice, and something like this would be the ultimate piece of fan engagement.
When would this happen? There's a convoluted theory based on random (and glitched) controller rumbles that this will happen tomorrow, as an April Fool's "joke." I'm suspect of that, mainly because there's a Battle Pass challenge to get kills at Tilted Towers, and that wouldn't exactly be possible without Tilted Towers itself (though I suppose it could keep the name as a crater, or the challenge would change).
If this happened, I'd expect it to happen with the beginning of Season 4. The new Seasons are big events for this game, when Epic wants to get as many players as excited as possible so that the shell out those $10 for the Battle Pass. A comet would certainly make a splash, so to speak.
