Sony could be working on some big new features for the PS5 release date
Sony's current crop of consoles continue to sell well, with plenty of new games lined up to launch on PS4 and PS4 Pro in 2018.
However, while the tech giant are still doing enough to be the leading brand in the console market, there are other rivals to contend with in the future.
Both the PS4 and Xbox One arrived in late 2013, meaning a generational shift could be coming soon.
While most analysts predicting that the PS5 release date won’t arrive until around 2020, there’s others who believe something could be announced sooner.
There have been reports of PlayStation 5 devkits being sent out already to third-party developers, which could be good news for fans hoping for an early announcement.
But while we wait for the next big news to drop there’s certainly been some indications on what might be included with the PS5.
Both Microsoft and Nintendo will be looking for larger shares of the console market moving forward, so Sony will be looking to expand on their PS4's successes.
And recent reports suggest that there are a few key areas they may focus on.
UPGRADED PLAYSTATION PLUS SERVICE
One is the PlayStation Plus subscription service, which has seen some top games announced for it in recent months.
Bloodborne making an appearance certainly shows that Sony are looking to provide AAA games to their fans who spend money on the service each month.
A Sony Corporate Strategy meeting in late 2017 shed more light on the company’s future plans, which appear to include a boost to the PS Plus service.
Sony management talked more on the subject, revealing that they wanted to make PlayStation Plus a more attractive prospect to fans to subscribe to.
These changes will be deployed to help grow subscriber figures, which apparently includes more than 70m monthly active users and 26.4 million PS Plus-paying members.
Other facts shared included PS4 users spending 600 million hours every week on the PS4, collectively.
While Sony didn’t go into a deep-dive on the subject, it was mentioned that they wanted to enhance the content offered through PlayStation Plus.
The PS5 release date will need to confirm some big upgrades
PS4 BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY
A good way to enhance the PS Plus subscription service on the PS5 would be to make it possible to play PS4 games on it.
And it just so happens that Sony Interactive Entertainment America recently updated a US patent which could indicate that the PS5 will be able to do just that.
The patent looks like it was originally filed in 2015, a few years after the launch of the PS4.
The PS4 can only play PS3 games via the PlayStation Now service.
But the patent has been updated to say: “Backward compatibility testing of software in a mode that disrupts timing.”
While it doesn’t confirm the PS5 will play PS4 games, it could show Sony are conducting backwards compatibility testing.
The patent also lists the name of Mark Cerny, the lead architect and producer of the PS4.
It remains to be seen whether the PS5 will support backwards compatibility for PS4 games.
PLAYSTATION VR 2
Just having compatibility with the current PSVR headset would give current owners an incentive to upgrade to a PS5.
And while Sony may look to keep the current PlayStation VR workable on their next console, a hardware upgrade down the road would make sense. One developer has teased what one of the main selling points of the PS5 will be.
Harold Vancol is the Creative Director at Grab Games, which has created the John Wick VR game and Knockout League.
And, judging by his latest comments, it looks like VR could be one of the main selling points of the PS5. Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine UK, Vancol said he did not think the PS5 should be bundled with a PSVR 2 headset.
However, he said the two products should be seen as “essential” together.
He said: “Buying a new console is a big undertaking for a lot of people, and buying the headset that I think people want to see in the future of PlayStation can almost be like buying a new console.
“So having these purchases separated gives each thing its own time to shine. However, PlayStation 5 and PSVR should be considered essential together.”
PSVR released back in October 2016, providing a far cheaper entry point to virtual reality than PC headsets like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.
It remains to be seen whether Sony will take the same approach with PSVR 2, or offer a more expensive headset.
