Fortnite: Battle Royale

If you're like me, you stared down this morning's challenge list in Fortnite: Battle Royale with horror. We just got done with the frustrating if manageable Sniper Rifle elimination challenge, and now we've got arguably the toughest weapon challenge of them all: the trap kill challenge. This week's list asks to eliminate a player with a trap, and while it's just one, it's still a tough ask. Let's look at some of the ways you can go about doing this, easy and otherwise.

All of these methods will be more difficult this season than last season because traps now do 75 instead of 125 damage.

There are a few different methods we'll look at here. The first is the most logical--we'll call it the "passive" approach. With that, you try to anticipate an enemy's movements and put a trap in their path. This might mean holing up in a building and placing a trap at the entrance, it might mean putting a trap by a particularly nice-looking piece of loot that you don't elect to collect, or it might mean placing a trap behind you while you're being pursued. Here, you're using a trap like a trap is used in most circumstances, Fortnite or otherwise.

Next, we've got the "active" approach, which is a whole lot harder -- you can see plenty of kills like this if you watch Ninja's stream. With this, you're not trying to fool anyone: the trap is right out in plain sight and the opponent, ideally, has no way to defend against it. You do this by boxing your opponent in close quarters combat and throwing up one of your own walls to their side, or maybe above them. Then, as quickly as you can, throw a trap on to that wall and let it fly. Like I said, it's hard to pull off and requires advanced fluency with building. Unlike the passive approach, however, it doesn't try to predict enemy behavior as much and can be more reliable for that reason.

And then there's what we'll call the "lame" way. This requires squads, duos or a large-team limited time mode. Basically, you've got to get an opponent down, but not out -- make sure you get a hit on them while they're standing or you won't get credit for the kill. Once they're down, box them in as best you can with a few walls and throw a trap on one: it should finish the job, giving you and your trap the credit. This is much easier with teammates who will hold off if you ask them and works with basically any weapons challenge.

As a special bonus, there's the "lamest" way, which I've used to grab a few challenge kills before. Load up the game on any platform, but ideally on mobile, where people are more likely to get to their bus stop, receive a phone call, or something. When the bus launches just wait until it kicks you off at the end. If you see anyone else floating aimlessly by you, there's a chance they're not actually there. See where they're going to land, go to the ground and hope to grab a trap. If you do, set up a wall next to them and put a trap on it. The nerf won't matter because they'll just stand there helplessly.

It's not easy and might take you a little while. But it can be done, and you've got six weeks to manage it.
