ミツバチは近年、ウイルス感染が世界的に問題になっている。影響するウイルスは数種類が確認され、感染し発病すると、羽が縮れたりまひを起こしたりするなどの症状が知られている。
同協会は、全国のミツバチ９２群から健康な働きバチを送ってもらい、チヂレバネウイルス、カシミール蜂ウイルスなど７種類について感染の有無を検査した。
ウイルスが確認できなかった群は９２群のうち１群だけ。特にチヂレバネウイルスは９８・９％で検出し、全国で満遍なくみられた。１種類のウイルスだけが検出された群は３４群で、検査対象の７種類のウイルスのうち６種類に感染している群が２群、５種類が６群と、複数のウイルスによる感染が広がっている。
ウイルスの伝染ルートは、ミツバチに寄生するミツバチヘギイタダニの媒介が疑われている。検査したミツバチの採集場所周辺に、同ダニがいたかどうかも聞き取り調査し、ダニの寄生が報告された群は全体の４２・４％。ダニがいてもいなくても感染率に差はなく、ダニ以外のルートでもウイルスが広がっている恐れがあるとみられる。
